◇Ozu Paper is Cherished for its History of Handmade Warmth

Ehime's history of paper making began approximately 200 years ago with the tesuki washi (handmade Japanese paper). Today most paper is produced by automated technology, but tesuki washi is still made the old way - by hand. Ehime is the leading producer of the Ozu paper (handmade) which is especially well-known and very popular among enthusiasts of Japanese calligraphy for its unique characteristics well suited for the art. The demand for this famous and high quality paper is increasing as it is also cherished, for example, in its use for letterheads and for small place mats for sweets served at traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. (Traditional craft designated by the Minister of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.)
