Kikuma Tiles (Kikuma Town)
The Beauty of Traditional Art That Shines in its
Silver-gray Luster
Kikuma tiles which have a 700 year history, are called ibushi
(silver-gray) tiles and are essential to traditional Japanese architecture,
thus making them a symbol of Japanese culture. Tile craftsmen who
specialize in the making of gargoyle shaped tiles (ridge end tiles) and
other decoratively shaped tiles are called 'gargoyle masters'. They have
created numerous works of art of fine taste with their traditional skills.
These art pieces of silver-gray luster, can still be seen on the roofs of
famous shrines and temples and castles all over Japan.
